This is the eighth piece from a collection of 20 Capricci by Italian composer Saverio Mercadante. It is not certain when these caprices were composed, but scholars tend to associate them with Mercadante's early years in Naples, between 1811 and 1814.

Traditional Irish jig
The earliest known appearance of this jig under the title “The Jolly Corkonian” is in Francis O'Neill's celebrated collection Music of Ireland, published in Chicago in 1903. In Irish Folk Music, O'Neill identifies the tune as “the original of the march the Scotch call ‛The Hills of Glenorchy’”; this is probably inaccurate, however, as the latter march appears in Scottish collections dating back to the early 1800s.

Traditional English tune
This tune was found by English folk group Boldwood among the unpublished manuscripts in the Vaughan Williams Library, Cecil Sharp House, London. They recorded it in their 2007 album, Feet Don't Fail Me Now.

from “Lucrezia Borgia”, transcribed for solo flute
The popular romanza “Com'è bello” (meaning “How lovely”) is part of the prologue of the 1833 opera Lucrezia Borgia by Italian composer Gaetano Donizetti. The present transcription for solo flute was published in Milan by Ricordi, probably not long after the opera premiered at La Scala theater.

This jig appears to be unique to Francis O'Neill's 1903 and 1907 collections Music of Ireland and The Dance Music of Ireland. Other tunes exist, however, which share the first half of “Willy Walsh's Jig”, such as “The Dandy Scholar”, “The Merry Maiden”, and “The Wandering Minstrel”.
